You can really get college credit for life experience.

Many people try to look down on someone who takes this clever path to their college degree. They complain that someone is simply buying a degree. The fact is these people feel like they wasted their time in college.

The truth is that earning a degree in the traditional way doesn't make someone more qualified than people who got  "credit for life degrees" .

Every trade has it's own requirement: If you're a lawyer, you'll need to pass the bar before you can practice, whatever your degree. In the tech world, cisco and microsoft certification programs carry far more weight than a piece of paper from a college.

This holds true for doctors, teachers, really any trade that requires you be skilled in certain areas has it's own testing program to certify that skill that has nothing to do with college.

Why are degrees necessary?

It might be a little un-charitable on my part to suggest it, but the main reason degrees are required in so many trades that have a separate testing program is simply that Human Resources looks at what a job pays and makes the arbitrary decision that a degree is required. This applies even more in situations where such testing programs aren't in place. Many companies place an arbitrary degree requirement on any that requires management skills. Does the person's having a degree make them a qualified manager? NO, their life experience makes them a qualified manager.
